How My Makeup Style Has Changed

Hey guys,
Today I wanted to talk about makeup styles and how mine has changed during these last few years. From full coverage everywhere to sheer and dewy glossiness. Let’s talk about it!

Coverage

The first point I would like to address is the coverage. The prefered coverage of my makeup application and products has changed a lot since 2017. I used to use foundations with very high coverage. Remember the days of 2017 where everything had to cover your face and turn it in a blank canvas? Yup, I followed the hype. My face was smothered in full coverage, matte foundation. Looking back, it emphasized my dryness, fine lines and pores so much. It looked heavy and just not flattering.

Today I prefer sheer to medium coverage with a satin or slightly luminous finish. Breathable, lightweight and just tolerable. Foundations can be quite tricky and disgusting on the face. I can feel it sitting on the face and I usually don’t like it. However, the characteristics of what I prefer today have made wearing foundation tolerable and I really like it now. Some of my favourites are the NYX Bare With Me Tinted Skin Veil, Maybelline Fit Me Dewy & Smooth, Essence Fresh & Fit foundation.

The same goes for concealer. High coverage concealers with a matte finish and a big hype behind them were my go-to products. Until I started to notice that the way my concealer was looking underneath my eyes wasn’t that great. It was always creasing. It was looking so dry and cakey and just not the way it was supposed to look. But that’s something I learned with time. Some of my favourites concealers are Catrice Liquid Camouflage, Makeup Revolution Conceal & Hydrate and the new E.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer. The coverage hasn’t changed that much. I still like a fuller coverage concealer. However, the finish isn’t matte anymore and I don’t apply as much product anymore. Just a few products and I’m happy.

Powder VS Cream

In the past, I never really thought about cream products. Also, because there weren’t a lot of cream options so I never really delved into them. Powder products were my jam and the more pigmented, the better. I regret my choices, I’m not going to lie haha.
In 2019 I started to realise that my bronzer and highlighter looked a bit weird (I wasn’t really wearing a whole lot of blush at that time) and I was wondering why that was.

I started following some other influencers like Samantha Ravandahl and Jamie Paige and noticed that they had the same issue in the past. Powder products back in 2017-2018 were all about the pigmentation. If a product wasn’t highly pigmented and saturated, then it wasn’t a good product. So a lot of brands only released products that were very pigmented.

Products that are more pigmented are harder to apply because there is so much pay off. You will struggle blending it and it will become muddy quickly. Then I discovered cream products. Cream products are just so seamless and easy to use. Powder can not absorb or blend well into the skin, but cream products, which are emollient in nature, blend a lot better and also blend better into each other. Some of my favourites are Nudestix Bondi Bae and the Fenty Cream Blushes. This also goes for highlighters. Give me a cream highlighter with a glossy finish instead of a metallic highlighter thanks, haha.

Lipstick

My lipstick preference has also changed quite a bit. I used to like very pigmented, matte lipsticks with a lot of staying power and longevity. Also, liquid lipsticks were a big thing for me. Fast forward three years later and I despise liquid lipstick and most matte lipsticks. I love a beautiful sheer to medium coverage formula with a satin or glossy finish. I found that matte lipsticks just don’t fade well and don’t look flattering after wearing it for a few hours. And liquid lipsticks aren’t flattering at all. Glosses and satin lipsticks are where it’s at. They make the lips look plump, voluminous and most importantly healthy. Something about dry crusty lips is just not my cup of tea anymore.

Setting Powder

The last biggest difference is setting powder. I used to set my entire face and cake it in powder. Now the problem was having dry skin. Dry skin and lots of powder don’t really mix well together. Also, I was already wearing a high coverage foundation and high coverage concealer which was already emphasizing every pore and all the texture on my face. Setting that base was just a nightmare because it turned into a cakey mask. And after that, I would go in with even more powder (bronzer, blush and highlight). Just a nightmare for dry skin.

These days, I like to set my under eyes a little bit and maybe the sides of my nose and that’s it. I don’t like a lot of powder anymore because it just doesn’t mesh well with my skin type and skin texture. I also stopped buying powders who are marketed as ‘Matte’ because that’s just not what I need. Instead I look for powder that promise a natural finish. Like the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting powder. I’ve been using that for over a year and I love it so much. Miracle powder.

So that’s it for today’s post. I hope you enjoyed watching and reading how my makeup style has changed throughout the years. I think it’s important to note that everyone goes through a phase that in a few years they will dislike. So, it’s okay to make mistakes and everyone’s style is different. What’s your makeup style now and has it changed?
Lots of love and see you soon!

  1. How interesting to see the direct comparison in the images of your makeup styles. I definitely agree in terms of matte liquid lips and full coverage matte concealer – so not my jam anymore! I think after discovering Fenty’s Gloss Bomb there was no turning back

  3. I can definitely relate to this. I used to love matte lipsticks but now all I wear is lip gloss . Also used to set my entire face because I liked that dry, matte look but now I always go for a dewy look instead and definitely not as cakey.

    1. Sorry for my late answer! Lip gloss is definitely that girl for me these days. Even if it’s not a lipgloss, it’s atleast something satin and hydrating haha. Thank you for reading! xx
